Small military town
DEFENSIVE BARRACKS
Once the largest and most important building of Crkvice was located at this place – a defensive barracks. Today you will find only the remains of its foundations and infrastructure.

MODERN MILITARY BASE
At the end of the 1880s, a modern military base was built in Crkvice, with 157 facilities and about 7000 soldiers and officers. There were barracks, barracks to accommodate the army, ammunition depots, stables, shooting ranges, a training ground, a hospital with an ambulance. The town had a completely solved infrastructure: power supply from its own generator, water through the of cisterns. Connections were maintained by telegraph and telephone lines and the Post Office had a permanent branch office.

LIFE IN CRKVICE
Life took place between regular military duties – training, discipline and everyday life, which was different from that in most military camps set up on inaccessible terrains. In order for the army, living far from the towns, to be well motivated and active, tennis courts (opposite the defensive barracks), football stadium, a training ground and a bowling alley were built. Theater and cinema performances were often organized. Guests who were visiting the soldiers were situated in a small hotel run by a local, at the foot of fortress Kom. Life here really was not much different from that in the coastal towns.

FROM OBLIVION TO A NEW AWAKENING
After the Austro-Hungarian army left the military base, the army of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia stayed there for a short time. In the 1960s, at the time of the dynamic development of the coast, the abandoned town became a source of building materials. Today, Crkvice is a unique combination of the beauty of nature and cultural and historical remains. This place can be found on the maps of interstate and national hiking routes. It represents an ideal picnic area or rest stop for pedestrians, cyclists or motorcyclists. At the site of the former military camp, you will discover the remains of a bakery, cisterns, military barracks, hospital, stables, fortresses Kom and Stražnik and cemeteries. All mentioned is enough for Crkvice to get a new life today – made up of stories, interactions and walks.
