The reason why you should definitely go to the fortress Šanik is the magnificent view of the Bay of Kotor and the “stone sea” of the hinterland, which comes as a reward for walking kilometers and overcoming ascents. The fortress was built in the immediate vicinity of the former border with the Kingdom of Montenegro, in order to prevent and slow down possible attacks by the Montenegrin army. Out of the modest remains, which are only a reminder of its size, a stone medallion with the initials of the Emperor FJI (Franz Joseph I) and the year when it was built remained on the outer wall. Your task is to find that medallion. A cistern filled with water and a part of the stone wall decoration carved with the finest craft technique can be found within the ruins. What we will not reveal to you now is the story of the art of building 200 stone cisterns, which are still functional today, after a century and one devastating earthquake. You will discover this story on a tourist board at the foot of the fortress, if you go to Šanik.
