Helenistic necropolis Mrljanovac

by

In the area of Gornji Radišići (hamlet Marići) near Ljubuški, there is the locality Mrljanovac, where the remains of graves from the developed Iron and Hellenistic periods (5th-1st century BC) were discovered. Through the Mrljanovac gorge, the fortifications of Sitomir (394 m above sea level) and Obala (369 m above sea level) were approached, which are located in prominent positions of the Butorovica mountain massif. Remains of a necropolis from the late Hellenistic period were discovered in the southern part of the Mrljanovac gorge, in the micro-locality of Grebina. The necropolis consists of a series of mass graves bordered by roughly worked monumental blocks of limestone. Individual tombs form an irregular shape of a rectangle, square, or circle, with one or more rings of architecture. The outer and inner edges are built of monumental partially worked stone blocks, while the interspace is filled with crushed / collected stone.
