Dvrsnik, together with fortress Strač in Trebinje, belongs to the last generation of fortresses designed before the First World War. At the end of the 19th century, this type of expensive and huge fortifications replaced the stone ones, which no longer provided the army with protection from a new generation of artillery, stronger destructive power and greater range. Today, remnants of fortress Dvrsnik are parts of the concrete, multi-storey structure, hidden in the natural environment, with walls which in some places are several meters thick. The artillery was located in steel structures, weighing up to 10 tons, with bulletproof turrets. Fifty years after the construction, these structures were remelted in Ironworks Nikšić. You can see what they looked like in the original photographs, taken at the beginning of the 20th century, on a tourist board near the fortress, which also contains the story of its construction. Only when you reach the top of the mountain on which the mighty fortress Dvrsnik is located, you will experience in the right way its greatness and significance that it had in the defense of the southern border of the empire.
